Welcome to Footy Seniors, a resource for seniors seeking a low threshold introduction to radio-controlled (R/C) model yachting. This site focuses on the Footy, the latest and smallest (just 12 inches) radio-controlled model sailboat class sanctioned by the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA), and raced worldwide. The Footy is particularly appropriate for novice senior model yachters. It's easily mastered. It could travel in a backpack. Its wee size makes it suitable for sailing in lighter air at smaller, accessible community ponds and lakes. It's humble enough for solo sailing and just quirky enough to make racing a hoot (see PICS). Footys are available as sail-ready models or may be crafted using either plans or kits (see SOURCES). The basic design is simple and, for the astute, invites experimentation (see CLASS). Footy enthusiasts regularly share their expertise and experiences in online forums, and local r/c model yachting clubs may provide mentors and vennues for learning to sail the Footy (see HOW-TO and LAUNCH). Seniors are well represented in these groups. This introduction to Footy sources was compiled by two senior model yachters. It began as Footy bookmarks--a list of those online sources that were most useful in crafting and learning to sail those first two Footys in ponds near Portland, Oregon (USA). It grew to inlcude model yachting print sources and the addresses of Footy masters and artisans. We intend it to be an electronic Footy tool kit--the one we wish we'd had. We welcome your suggestions, comments and pictures as we continue to hone our Footy skills and grow this site. And if you're in our area, we invite you to join us for a sail anytime. |
